Enhancement of growth and yield of broccoli (Brassica oleracea L. var. italica) through different doses of potassium and zinc

Abstract
To assess the effect of potassium and zinc on growth and yield of broccoli an experiment was conducted at the Horticulture Farm, Bangladesh Agricultural University, during the period from November 2017 to February 2018. The experiment consisted of four doses of potassium (K), Viz. K0: 0 (Control), K1: 50 kg, K2: 70 kg and K3: 100 kg per hectare and four doses of Zinc (Zn), Viz, Zn0: 0 (Control), Zn1: 1 Kg, Zn2: 2 Kg and Zn3: 3 Kg per hectare, respectively. The two-factor experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. The results of the experiment revealed that plant height, primary curd diameter, primary curd weight, secondary curd weight, stem diameter, yield per hectare were significantly increased by different levels of Potassium (100 kg/ha), gave the best result on plant height (47.48 cm),  primary curd diameter (13.76 cm), primary curd weight (228.86 gm), weight of secondary curd (36.37 gm) stem diameter (3.49 cm), yield per plant (265.23 gm), yield per plot 3.18 kg and yield per hectare (13.26 ton). The highest level of zinc (3 kg/ha) produced the best result on plant height (45.13 cm), plant spread (39.99 cm), primary curd diameter (214.39 g), secondary curd weight (32.55 g), stem diameter (3.21 cm), yield per plant (246.94 g), yield per plot (2.96 kg) and yield per hectare (12.35 t). The combined treatment of 100 kg potassium and 3 kg zinc per hectare produced the highest weight of primary curd (276.04 gm), yield per plot (3.78 kg) and yield per hectare (15.75 t). The lowest weight of primary curd (141.98 g), yield per plot (1.70 kg) and yield per hectare (7.08t) were obtained from no application of potassium and zinc at harvest. Considering the above findings, applications of 100 kg potassium with 3 kg zinc per hectare appeared to be suitable for growth and yield of broccoli.

Weed management and yield performance of T. Aman rice as influenced by Artocarpus heterophyllus leaf residues

Abstract
The emergence of herbicide-resistant weeds and environmental concerns about synthetic pesticides have significantly developed alternative weed management techniques. Allelopathy has the largest yield potential of any weed control strategy and has no adverse environmental effects, making it the best option. To investigate the allelopathic effects of Artocarpus heterophyllus leaf residues on weed management and the yield performance of T. aman rice, the current experiment was set up at the Agronomy Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh, from July to December 2021. Three rice varieties, BRRI Dhan34, Kalizira, and Nizershail, as well as three residual treatments of A. heterophyllus leaves, 0, 1.0, and 2.0 t ha-1, were used in the field experiment. The grain yields in BRRI Dhan34 were the highest at 5.00 t ha-1, while those in Nizershail were the lowest at 4.13 t ha-1). Applying A. heterophyllus leaf residue at a rate of one t ha-1 resulted in the greatest number of effective tillers hill-1, number of grain panicle-1, 1000-grain weight, and grain and straw yield. Applying residue from A. heterophyllus leaves at a rate of one t ha-1 resulted in the maximum grain yield (7.06 t ha-1) for BRRI dhan34. Based on study results, A. heterophyllus residue considerably impacts T. aman rice yield and can limit weed growth. The remainder of A. heterophyllus may be utilized to manage weeds efficiently and sustainably while cultivating crops.

Farmer-led promotion of late blight-resistant potato varieties to enhance productivity in northern Bangladesh

Abstract
Late blight (Phytophthora infestans) is the principal constraint limiting potato yield and stability during the Rabi season in Bangladesh due to humid and cool agro-climates. This study field-tested and disseminated two late blight-resistant cultivars, BARI Alu-53 and BARI Alu-77, through farmer-participatory trials across Kurigram, Lalmonirhat, Nilphamari, and Rangpur during 2022–23. Eleven on-farm randomized block trials compared these cultivars against the susceptible control, BARI Alu-25. Data on disease incidence, tuber yield, agronomic traits, and farmer assessments were collected. BARI Alu-53 and Alu-77 significantly reduced late blight incidence (2.5–6%) compared to 20–45% in the control and improved yield (3–18% higher). Fungicide application frequency was reduced to 0–2 sprays per season compared to 10–15 in susceptible varieties. Farmers appreciated the improved quality, taste and market value of the tubers. These resistant varieties are highly suitable for sustainable potato cultivation in late blight-prone regions. The study emphasizes the importance of policy support in quality seed multiplication, farmer training and broader dissemination to enhance potato productivity and ensure ecological sustainability.

Effect of PROBEX-BS on yield and economic performance of tomato

Abstract
A field experiment was conducted during the Rabi season of 2023–2024 at the on-station research fields of the On-Farm Research Division (OFRD) of the Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI) at Rangpur and Pabna to evaluate the agronomic and economic impacts of PROBEX-BS, a Bacillus subtilis-based biofertilizer, on tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.). The study employed a randomized complete block design with five treatments: T₁ = 100% recommended chemical fertilizer (RCF); T₂ = PROBEX-BS + 15% TSP reduction; T₃ = PROBEX-BS + 30% TSP reduction; T₄ = PROBEX-BS + 50% TSP reduction; and T₅ = farmers' conventional practice. The tomato variety BARI Tomato-14 was used. Results indicated that T₂ recorded the highest fruit yield (82.17 t ha⁻¹) and maximum economic return (MBCR = 7.54), outperforming both chemical-only and farmer-practice treatments. Application of PROBEX-BS improved nutrient uptake, root development, fruit quality, and marketability while reducing post-harvest losses. These findings validate PROBEX-BS as an eco-friendly, cost-effective biofertilizer for sustainable tomato production. Wider adoption and long-term validation under varying agroecological conditions are recommended.
