What is Article Processing Charge (APC)?
An Article Processing Charge (APC), also known as a publication fee, is a fee which is sometimes charged to authors to make a work available in an open access peer review journal. This fee is usually paid by an author's institution or research funder rather than by the author themselves as and where possible. Authors may choose other sources of funding to publish their research findings. The APC is used for handling and processing of a manuscript and consequent publication, but we do not charge authors for submissions.
Why should I (Author or Project fund or Institution) pay APC?
All articles published in our journals are open access and freely available online, immediately upon publication. This is made possible by an article processing charge that covers the range of publishing services we provide, such as editorial costs (if any), any costs of administrating the peer review system and editorial office, copy editing (i.e. manuscript preparation), journal production (i.e. layout and formatting), open access online publication and hosting, crossref DOI annual fee, crossref DOI article deposits fee, indexing and achieving fees, online content/journal promotion fees and customer services. As such, the cost of publishing is recovered upfront through APCs rather than from subscribers or readers. The APC, payable when your manuscript is editorially accepted and before publication, is charged to you or from your funder, institution or employer as convenient.
When should I pay and who is responsible for payment?
Upon editorial acceptance of an article, the corresponding author (you) will be notified that payment is due. We advise prompt payment as we may unable to publish accepted articles until payment has been received by us. As the corresponding author of the manuscript, you are responsible for making or arranging the payment (for instance, via your institution/projects) upon editorial acceptance of a manuscript.
