ABSTRACT

Area coverage, production and yield of potato have increased in last few decades in Bangladesh. The average yield of potato is 18.08 t/ha. Its production can be increased up to 30-40 t/ha using high yielding varieties and improved production technology. Tuber Crop research Centre (TCRC) of BARI has so far developed 44 potato varieties which were selected from exotic varieties, foreign germplasm and germplasm developed in Bangladesh by introducing and crossing programme. The formal seed potato produced less than 10% seeds of the total requirement. But the supply of quality seeds through formal system is remarkably increasing. The seeds supplying through informal system is not recognized to be quality seeds because in the informal system seeds are not produced by following the steps of seed technology, rather tubers for food are used as seeds. The formal sector seed potato production is only 5-9% of the total requirement. The use of these poor quality seed is one of the major factors responsible for lower potato yield. Unless quality seed potato our challenge for achieving food security of the country cannot be fulfilled. In prioritizing different issues of agriculture, supply of high quality potato seed to the farmers should be essential concern. For increasing quality seed supply to the farmers, formal and informal sector need to work together with both contact grower and farmer level to produce seed potato by multiplication of foundation seeds or tissue culture seed or mini-tuber supply. The capacity and capability of both public and private sector should be strengthened for the improvement of seed potato system in Bangladesh.

ABSTRACT

For maintaining of soil quality and attainable crop yield, it is required to add proper amount of fertilizers and minimize the misuse of soil resources which is possible by knowing actual situation of soil physical, chemical and biological condition through observation, investigation and soil testing. Soil test is an imperative tool for assessing the fertilizer or manure requirement for sustainable production of crops and for sustaining soil fertility. Soil test and subsequent fertilizer recommendation was pioneered and provided to farmers by the Soil Resource Development Institute (SRDI), Ministry of Agriculture, Bangladesh. SRDI is conducting soil sample analysis in static and mobile laboratories. Through soil analytical results interpretation and or Upazila Nirdeshika data as and where necessary, subsequent balanced fertilizer recommendation for cropping pattern(s) is provided at farmer’s level. While BLGG AgroXpertus is an international company located in Wageningen, the Netherlands, which provides soil and plant based fertilization recommendations on the basis of soil analysis, but the recommendation mainly based on information originated from European research. Bangladesh has agricultural potentials and problems related to its soil and land resources such as alteration of soil nutrient status, soil fertility decline, soil acidity, soil salinity, phosphorus fixation in the piedmont areas, decline of soil organic matter etc. But the condition of Europe, as well as the Netherlands, is not always similar with Bangladesh. For instance, a higher sulphur (S) deposition was reported in the Netherlands (05 kg/ha) whereas in Bangladesh, it was negligible. Mineralization rate of organic matter was much higher in Bangladesh compare to the Netherlands. In addition, phosphorus (P) status was almost high in different parts of the Netherlands and it was very low to low in Bangladesh except some piedmont areas. Therefore, it is a prerequisite to adjust and optimize the fertilizer recommendation to the Bangladesh’s situation as a better applicability of soil report of this company in Bangladesh as the supplement of existing fertilizer recommendation system. As the mineralization high in Bangladesh, the company can recommend applying the whole amount of organic matter by dividing into 2-3 applications in a year. BLGG AgroXpertus Company can provide support, encouragement and guidance to rural farmers and advice about sustainable management practice of soils. The company can provide leaflets to farmers about the importance of organic matter and benefits of soil test for the establishment of organic matter. This company offers not only fertilizer recommendation of crops but also additional important information, for example, organic matter balance, soil structure, water retention curve and soil type is given to farmers. As BLGG AgroXpertus Company uses traditional as well as NIR method for soil test, they can investigate higher number of soil samples in less time, which would be much efficient and useful for farmers of Bangladesh if supported by SRDI to implement with its existing optimum and balanced fertilizer recommendation.

ABSTRACT

Globalization is a buzz word for the twenty first century; and its impact for the developing countries is rather narrow and scarce in terms of economic and social up-liftment unless it has been implemented with sufficient justification that can ensure and favor the economic progress of a developing country. Global trade, commerce, economy, transportation, transaction, communication are being expanded in the name of globalization throughout the world but developed countries gained more benefits from this. It makes the reach people richer and degrading the economic conditions of the poor people. The people of developing countries cherish a dream to be developed, but that is still a great hallucination for those people. The developed countries are absorbing the facilities, natural resources, manpower & labour from the developing countries in different ways to strengthen their trade and commerce. This paper discussed the scenario of hallucination derived from global trade and commerce activities, which is created, reinforced and nourished by the developed countries to favor their economic sustainability further but these countries claim that they are helping the developing countries towards development.

ABSTRACT

Inefficient use of inputs and conventional management practices that are applied during crop production is leading the depletion of soil quality. The inability of conventional farming to address soil variation not only has a detrimental economic impact due to reduced yield but also adversely affects the environment. The need of sustainable management appeals for alternative approaches which will increase the productivity and resources efficiency; and will be desirable in the ecological context as well. Thus, sustainable development has reinforced the process to evolve as a more quantitative manner to optimize soil management and impart spatially differentiated treatments. There is a global need to develop tools that will evaluate soil quality and contribute in the effectiveness and sustainability of farm management. Soil properties delineation at field and landscape scale is extremely important for a variety of agronomic and environmental concerns. The existing knowledge and recent researches (Stenberg et al., 2010) on soil-NIR measurements for soil analysis by the NIR spectroscopic technique could be used potentially for estimation of available nitrogen (N) and cation exchange capacity (CEC) of soils which will optimize fertilization strategy and farmer decision supports. However, this is worth mentioning that NIR measurements are not new in this scientific arena but it has not been practiced so far for estimation of soil properties in Bangladesh. Exploration of its potential would be beneficial for soil property analysis (and or estimation).

ABSTRACT

New initiatives in banking sectors have contributed to change the entire economy. New forms of client interactive banking systems such as internet banking, ATM, mobile banking, green banking and also maturing financial market and global contest have forced bankers to explore the significance of customer loyalty. Thus, studies need to focus on changing role of the banking system and its dynamic financial market. The basic model of SERVQUAL with five components was used for this study to evaluate the effect of service quality on customer loyalty among bank customers with customer satisfaction mediating these variables such as reliability, responsiveness, assurance, loyalty etc. Outcomes show that amplification in service quality can improve customer loyalty. The service quality dimensions that play a vital role in this equation are reliability, empathy and assurance. Results indicated that overall respondents appraise banking service positively but still there are opportunities for improvements.

Key words: Customer satisfaction, reliability, responsiveness, assurance and loyalty

Abstract: The present study was undertaken to examine livelihood improvement of small farmers through family poultry by income and employment generation. The data were collected from 60 family poultry farms families from two upazila of Mymensingh district through direct interview method. As analytical tools simple statistical measures, Cobb Douglas production function was used to observe the impact of explanatory variables on gross return while problem confrontation index (PCI) was calculated in order to ascertain the extent of severity of problems confronted by family poultry farmers. It was found that family poultry farming was chosen by 100% farmers as subsidiary occupation. Small farmers earned an income of Tk. 3705.95 per year as net return from family poultry farming and it generated on average 53.23 working man days per year as employment especially for women. As regards of livelihood improvement, family poultry farming changed food habit, increased knowledge and skill, savings, social status, recreational facility, improved food nutritional condition, family health and sanitation and enhanced women empowerment. Among the explanatory variables observed bird cost, feed cost, labor cost had positive and significant impact on gross return and impact of transportation & marketing cost was positive but insignificant. Outbreak of disease was found as the main setback in family poultry production.
Key words: Cost, return, profitability, employment generation and income generation
